Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I apply to Roosevelt School of the Arts Magnet Program?
Application packets are available from RSA or from FUSD’s Department of Prevention and Intervention (1350 M Street, 93721 – (559) 457-6073) or online. The packet includes an application form, a list of offered electives and other information. Completed applications should be returned to the Department of Prevention and Intervention (FAX # 457-6071).
Is there an application deadline?
The application deadline is the first day of December. Late applicants will be accepted on a space available basis. Currently space is available.
Who attends RSA?
RSA draws students from throughout the Fresno Unified School District, as well as neighboring districts (on an inter-district transfer). A transfer must be granted from the resident school district before a student may complete the application process for RSA. Qualified inter-district students will be accepted on a space available basis only.
RSA students have demonstrated an interest in one or more of our pathway areas: dance; instrumental or vocal music; theatre; visual arts; graphic arts; or video production. Students who are focused in the arts are self-directed learners; their desire to learn makes them successful at RSA.
What is unique about RSA?
RSA students and staff are a small close-knit community of learners and facilitators. RSA stays actively involved in local school-business partnerships. One of our unique partnerships enables RSA students to work in the area of radio and television production.
RSA students receive an arts and communication infused curriculum. RSA students are multi-age grouped (9th – 12th) as they are placed in arts classes that teach to their ability level.
RSA has many unique, pre-professional ensembles. The Steel Drum Band, Mariachi Band, Marimba Band, Latin/Jazz Band, PA Singers, Danzantes Folkloric Dancers, Space For Rent Improvisational Players, and the Studio D Dancers are well known in the community and perform regularly for various functions. RSA provides the only sequential dance program in the county and teaches five styles of dance from beginning to pre-professional level. RSA is also the only school to produce three main-stage plays during the school year. Our departments are staffed with active professionals who instill enthusiasm and demand excellence from our students.
What role do parents play at RSA?
Parents take an active role in their students’ education. RSA has a dedicated parent organization, the Friends of Roosevelt School of the Arts (FRSA), which assists RSA by raising money for student scholarships, organizing performance refreshments, sponsoring a 50/50 raffle, and multiple other activities. RSA parents also serve on the RHS School Site Council.
May I visit the school?
Yes. We encourage you to do this. School tours and student visitations are held on a prearranged basis. To arrange the tour, call the RSA office (559)253-5323 to schedule a date.
How do you decide if I am accepted into RSA?
RSA is a school of application. After you submit an application and are accepted into the magnet program, you will be invited to attend a Saturday Placement Day, the last Saturday in February. Our goal is for every student to be successful. After you submit an application and are accepted into the magnet program, you will be invited to attend a Saturday Placement Day, February 7, 2008, where you will demonstrate your skill in your chosen field and be tentatively placed in classes for the 2008-2009 school year. Beginners are encouraged to apply and should come prepared to meet the instructors and discuss a four-year program. Parents should accompany their student to Placement Day. More detailed information will be sent to you once you have submitted your application for admittance into RSA. If you miss placement day, you will be asked to meet with the RSA counselor individually.
Placement Day is the last Saturday in February from 9-noon in the RHS cafeteria. You will fill out an RHS application packet and receive a tentative list of classes for the next school year. If you cannot attend this session, you will need to make arrangements to meet individually with our counselor, Kim Clarke.

It will be an opportunity to visit the school, talk to an RSA counselor and meet teachers involved with the visual and performing arts. The event will occur in the Roosevelt auditorium.
